Air Circulation in Greenhouses – Myths and Realities

  • Myth #1 – “I don’t need air circulators because I have good ventilation”:

Reality:
Most greenhouse ventilation systems, especially during the winter months, are either completely closed or nearly closed from the afternoon until the next morning. That means there is very little ventilation precisely when plants need it the most. If ventilation is used at night, it often worsens the humidity problem, since the incoming air is much colder, leading to even more condensation.
Air circulation inside the greenhouse must be improved using air circulators.

  • Myth #2 – “I don’t need fans because I have good heating”:

Reality:
Crops like tomatoes produce huge amounts of water vapor during the day. Much of that moisture remains in the greenhouse at night. A good heating system can help reduce humidity inside the greenhouse—but this comes at a high energy cost.
Much of that energy cost can be saved by using Horizontal Airflow Fans (EOS 450 Air Circulators) in combination with heating to help dry the plant foliage efficiently.

  • Myth #3 – “Installing and operating fans at night is expensive”:

Reality:
The capital cost of installing air circulators is very low—about €1.50–€2.00 per square meter of greenhouse. Operating costs are almost negligible compared to the benefits they provide.
Each fan consumes around 160 Watts, and at an electricity rate of €0.15 per kWh, it costs only €0.0225 per hour.
It is one of the best value-for-money investments you can make in your greenhouse.
