The use of misting systems in greenhouse cultivation has become increasingly popular in recent years, gradually replacing traditional spraying methods.
Rising labor costs, the difficulty of finding workers (skilled or not), the need for more frequent spray applications due to emerging diseases (e.g., Tuta absoluta in tomatoes), time constraints, and the demand for production optimization have made the use of LVM misting systems an essential tool for the modern farmer. The benefits of using a misting system far outweigh the investment cost, offering practical solutions to the daily challenges faced by producers.
Problem: I can’t find workers – I don’t have time
Spraying a greenhouse using conventional methods (e.g., hose spraying) requires significant preparation time and labor. Usually, two people are needed for the application. In recent years, finding agricultural labor has become increasingly difficult, forcing producers to handle most tasks themselves—often without enough time.
Solution:
With an LVM misting system, the preparation time is significantly reduced (only 8 liters of solution are needed for each application), and the spraying is fully automated without requiring human presence inside the greenhouse. In addition, applications can be scheduled after sunset for maximum convenience.
Problem: I don’t have time to spray – High disease infestation
Lack of time often leads to missing the optimal spraying window, resulting in severe infestations. Once a disease becomes widespread, no spraying system can fully resolve the issue, leading to poor crop quality and high treatment costs (in both chemicals and labor).
Solution:
As the saying goes: “Prevention is the best cure.” The LVM misting system allows for easy and rapid application. As soon as the grower detects a disease in the greenhouse, they can spray the same day (in the evening) and stop the issue before it spreads throughout the crop.
Also, modern pesticides in the EU are milder to protect consumers, making them less effective for severe outbreaks. Frequent misting applications can help manage diseases before they become unmanageable.
Problem: No matter what I try, spraying isn’t effective
As mentioned earlier, limited time and less aggressive chemical formulations often result in poor disease control. Additionally, new diseases like Tuta absoluta in tomatoes have emerged, which are difficult to manage with conventional chemicals.
Solution:
Beyond the ease of use, the LVM misting system is significantly more effective than conventional spraying (e.g., hose-based methods).
Because it creates extremely fine droplets (mist), the solution reaches all parts of the crop and greenhouse—including hard-to-reach areas. This is crucial for both pest control and disinfection, as the airborne mist penetrates every corner, maximizing the effectiveness of the treatment.
Specifically for Tuta absoluta, Megatherm’s LVM systems create a dense mist throughout the entire volume of the greenhouse, trapping the insects and improving control efficiency. In contrast, with traditional spraying, the insect often escapes by flying to unreachable areas.
Problem: I can’t spray powder-based products with the misting system
When using powdered pesticides, the nozzles can become clogged during spraying.
Solution:
For powder-based products, Megatherm offers special nozzles with a larger diameter, ensuring clog-free operation.
Problem: My greenhouse is too large for a misting system to cover
Some growers mistakenly believe their greenhouse is too big for an LVM system.
Solution:
Megatherm manufactures four different models to meet all sizes and application needs:
- LVM 2001 Jet – Covers up to 2,000 m². Recommended for small installations (1–2 greenhouses).
- LVM 2001 – Covers up to 2,000 m². Suitable for larger operations requiring frequent spraying.
- LVM 2001 (extended) – Covers up to 4,000 m². Ideal for any greenhouse up to that size.
- LVM 2001 TR (Fixed System) – This system uses fixed spray heads that can cover any greenhouse size. The number of heads depends on the total area. The system is completed with an air compressor, control panel, and air network. Design and implementation are handled exclusively by Megatherm.
Problem: The cost of an LVM misting system is “too high”
Many farmers believe that the cost of a modern LVM system is too high for them to afford.
Solution:
Megatherm’s LVM misting systems are manufactured in Greece since 1990, making them significantly more affordable compared to imported alternatives. Additionally, Megatherm designed the LVM 2001 Jet, specifically for smaller greenhouse operations, offering a cost-effective solution.
Most importantly, when considering purchasing an LVM misting system, it’s essential to focus on the savings it provides—reduced labor, lower pesticide use, and improved crop quality and yield.
